Finding work-life balance – lesson plan PDF

Now that you have watched the demo lesson, download the lesson plan PDF below and prepare to teach the lesson yourself. Before you do so, read through the stages of the lesson carefully and prepare yourself to deliver the class. Remember to keep in mind the tips and advice given in the demo lesson previously. Also have in mind that this is all part of your continued professional development - you are not looking for perfection, simply prepare to teach the class with an attitude of freedom, both for yourself and for your students. These lessons are designed to give students space and time to use English as the vehicle to communicate about subjects which are of universal interest - in this case, finding the balance between work and other important areas of our lives. Enjoy the lesson!

Here is the lesson plan to accompany the guided commentary you have just worked through. You can read a summary of the lesson in the flyer (pictured).

Before you teach

  • Print the lesson plan below.
  • Set the pre-class task. This could be done at the end of a class leading up to this session or sent to your students via e-mail or other messaging service as homework.
  • Familiarise yourself with the plan and consider which group you plan to teach it with.
  • Consider making any tweaks to the language you intend to feed-in at the various stages to suit the level that you are teaching. Remember any action points you have identified and added to your Development Bucket List.
  • Consider the time you have available and plan accordingly.
  • Go through the logistics of each task in your head to work out whether you will opt for individual, pair or group work for example in each case.

In class

  • Teach the lesson at your own pace.
  • Relax and stick to the plan.
  • Give students plenty of time to complete exercises. Challenge early finishers to review/recycle/repeat/improve.

After the class

In whichever way you prefer to do this, write down some reflections about the class while the experience is fresh in your mind. Focus on the positive. Consider the following:-

  • What went well?
  • What might you do differently next time?
  • What would have made it even better?
  • Anything else i.e engagement levels, level of challenge, how you felt, what challenges came up
